William H. Rawson - K2AX
DOVER - William H. Rawson died on Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, at St. Clare’s Hospital/Denville. He was 87. Born in Soquel, Calif., he lived in Berkeley, Calif., before moving to Dover in 1945 when he left the Navy. Mr. Rawson worked as a newspaper editor at the Newark Evening News in Newark for 25 years, until its closing. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Dover. He graduated from San Francisco Junior College and from Drew University with honors in 1948. He started as a reporter with the Daily Record, then became a reporter and later an editor at the Newark Evening News. After the paper shut down, he was the town clerk of Dover for two years, He then worked as a credit manager at H.O. Baker Insurance in Dover for 12 years.
He was an active radio amateur since 1929. His call letters were K2AX. His involvement in amateur radio led him to involvement in communication consulting for several Morris County municipalities as well as Civil Defense work during the Cold War era. He was a charter member of the Morris Radio Club as well as a member of the North Jersey DX Association.
He was chosen as Man of the Year by the Dover Lions Club in 1984. He was a member of the advisory board of the Salvation Army, a member of the West Morris YMCA board and former member of the Morris County Human Services Committee. He was a former member and past president of the Dover Public Library Board of Trustees. He taught English as a second language in Dover as well as Spanish in Morris County area adult schools. He was a member of the Dover Rotary Club, where he was a Paul Harris Fellow and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10200 of Dover. He served in the Navy during World War II, serving in the North African Campaign as a radio operator and pilot.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Edna (Rainbow); his son, Richard W. and wife Deborah Hull-Rawson of Bethlehem, Pa.; his granddaughter, Leah Hull-Rawson; his two brothers, Lawrence of Felton, Calif., and Ralph of Stayton, Ore.; and his many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services at Tuttle Funeral Home, 272 Route 10, Randolph on Monday, Dec. 30, at 10 a.m. Interment at Locust Hill Cemetery, Dover. Visitation is Sunday from 1-5 p.m. at the Tuttle Funeral Home, 272 Route 10, Randolph.
